663 King Street West
On the evening of April 4th, the GDNA, along with the Wellington Place Neighbourhood Association, was invited to a preview of the proposed development at the SE corner of King and Bathurst. Daniel Byrne of Main and Main and Don Schmitt of Diamond and Schmitt were in attendance, presenting their vision and listening to residents' comments. The Banknote Bar at 663 King West, formerly the Canada Biscuit Company and later the Bank of Montreal, has been a listed (as apposed to designated) heritage building since 1973 and is now designated as part of the King-Spadina HCD. So I attended this meeting with the mindset that this site must be kept intact. Although the King Street facade is attractive (and will be maintained by the developer), anyone who frequents this block agrees that the Bathurst Street strip is less than awesome. The brickwork is crumbling, the windows are small and too high to provide any visual stimulation, there are obvious additions and changes to the original. When we were shown what was being proposed and explained the reasons why, I confess that I softened on my earlier stand. You too might be interested. Details can be found in ERA's Heritage Impact Assessment accessible via Supporting Documentation in the sidebar or by clicking here to download a pdf copy. My opinion ...
