A Short History of the Ace Hotel Development

Once a three story office building, 51 Camden Street (along with 49 Camden next door) is slated to become an Ace Hotel.  In April 2015, developers held a pre-application meeting with community residents (link to notes).  Concerns expressed at that meeting were:
   - building height with loss of sunlight to the park on the west and to condominiums on the north
   - traffic congestion associated with guest activity requiring taxis or private vehicles
   - noise levels concomitant to a young hip guest population, especially if a rooftop patio were to be included as a hotel facility

The Ace Hotel is a known chain in other major North American and international cities (http://www.acehotel.com/).  Media commentators are generally enthusiastic about this development (link to Toronto Life article).

In August 2015, developers submitted a rezoning application to City Hall (link to architectural plans ... a 28 MB pdf).
Community residents are encouraged to submit comments to the City Planner assigned to this development (link to input form).

I provided feedback to the City Planner about my concerns related to this development which are similar to issues raised during the April community meeting: (1) Building height (2) Noise (3) Traffic (4) Strain on city infrastructure such as roadwork, plumbing, electricity. Charlene Miranda acknowledged my comments and indicated that the application is under review. Stay tuned for another community meeting in November.

Looks like all of your concerns were totally ignored as there were no changes presented at the November 17th meeting. From the developer's point of view, it's full steam ahead regardless of the implications to people living on Camden like limited sky view, party noise from the rooftop, and increased traffic. And to think that the Ace will be precedent setting for future development on Camden makes me wonder why the city is so resigned to development that destroys the quality of life for people who live in the city.
